This attractive house was formerly a priory of Augustinian canons, founded around 1135. It's name does not relate to the island of Anglesey, rather it comes from Angerhale, a fenland hamlet close-by.
The house with its attractive tall chimneys, bays and arched central door, is set in magnificent grounds covering 98 acres of beautiful woodland and wildlife gardens, these are a joy to stroll in after seeing the treasures of the abbey. It is worth noting that although the house is historic the grounds are formed from an area of level fen which was imaginatively transformed in the 20th century. It is interspersed with stunning garden statutory, and in spring there is a lovely Snowdrop walk.
Anglesey Abbey presents a comfortable home built around a former priory chapter house and day room - it is renowned for the variety and richness of the collections displayed within. This was gathered together by Huttleston Broughton, Ist Lord Fairhaven, who was extremely rich and able to lavish a fortune on his passion for art. It was Lord Fairhaven who built the library wing and galleries block, to which as late as 1955 he added a connecting bridge.
Visitors to the house can see perfectly arranged paintings, engravings, tapestries, rare books and other objects d'art, set amongst sumptuous furnishings, looking very much as they did when Lord Fairhaven owned the house. His taste was entirely catholic, ranging from the Middle-Ages to the 19th century, and cosmopolitan.
Also on show is a fully restored 18th century water mill.
The house is open from May to October.
